Dean M. Toriumi is honoree of the 20th Annual Louis F. Scaramella, MD Resident Research Fund Golf Outing and is strongly tied to the mission of research this event supports. He is director of Resident Research for the Department and a primary figure in our residents’ learning.

A lifelong resident of Illinois, he was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and received his undergraduate education at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Dean attended Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed a five-year residency training program in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School. Dr. Toriumi also completed two fellowship training programs in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Tulane University Hospital and the University of Washington in Seattle. He joined the department at UIC in 1989.

He has published many clinical papers in facial plastic surgery and co-authored Open Structure Rhinoplasty and the Rhinoplasty Dissection Manual. Dr. Toriumi is primarily known for his expertise in rhinoplasty and stresses preservation of structural support and creation of a natural-looking outcome. Much of his practice is dedicated to secondary rhinoplasty, or correction of noses damaged by previous surgery.

An avid golfer, Dean has participated as often as possible in the golf tournament since its inception twenty years ago. He enjoys spending time with his wife Colleen and their daughters, Hannah and Olivia.
